Dear Moviegoers,
School holidays are well and truly underway with huge audiences for almost everything in the program!
Bookings are essential during this busy time, so be sure to phone book, or use our online booking system.
KUNG FU PANDA [PG] stars the voice talents of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan and there's lots of fun for young and old!
The hilarious GET SMART [PG] with Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart, Agent 86, and Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 is also showing. Saving the world.... and loving it!

Bookings now open for both films!!

NIM'S ISLAND [PG] is screening daily at 10am until Wednesday 9th July, for those that haven't enjoyed this action packed, fun family film. Bookings strongly recommended, as it is just the one daily session of this film.

Not long now until the fabulous MAMMA MIA starts next week, from July 10th.
Meryl Streep leads an all-star cast in the feature-film adaptation of the beloved musical that has been seen by more than 30 million people in 160 cities and 8 languages around the world.
Bringing the timeless lyrics and melodies of iconic super group ABBA to movie audiences, Winter 2008 is the season for 'Mamma Mia!' Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper join Streep in this celebration of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads.
An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Streep) is about to let go of Sophie the spirited daughter she's raised alone.
For Sophie's wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends--practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski)--from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna's past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.

Also from July 10th, we have 2 French films commencing limited seasons - MOLIERE [PG] and THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (M). MOLIERE - A re-imagination of the life and times of Moliere, one of the great writers of his generation. We join the story when Moliere is an impetuous 22 year-old, his theatre troupe is a failure, he is bankrupt and in prison because he can't pay his debts. It is mid-17th century Paris and Moliere is a long way from realising his legacy as the father and true master of comic satire.

THE EDGE OF HEAVEN - Nejat initially disapproves of his widower father Ali's choice of prostitute Yeter for a live-in girlfriend. But the young professor warms to her when he learns that most of her hard-earned money is sent home to Turkey for her daughter's university studies. After Yeter's accidental death, Nejat travels to Istanbul to search for Yeter's daughter Ayten. Political activist Ayten has fled the Turkish police and is already in Germany. She is befriended by a young woman, Lotte, who invites rebellious Ayten to stay in her home, much to the displeasure of her conservative mother, Susanne. When Ayten is arrested and her asylum plea denied, she is deported and imprisoned in Turkey. Passionate Lotte abandons everything to help Ayten. A tragic event brings Susanne to Istanbul to help fulfill her daughter's mission.

This week, if you haven't already, be sure to book into the popular film THE PAINTED VEIL (M) starring Naomi Watts and Edward Norton. At this point in time, this current season of the filmis set to conclude on Wednesday 23rd July, so in the event that our copy of the film does indeed need to move to another location after that date, don't miss out!We are still hoping that we will be able to hang onto the film for a much longer period.

THE ORPHANAGE

Laura (Belen Rueda) spent her childhood years in an orphanage where she played happily with friends until she was adopted out. Now, as an adult she returns to the orphanage with her husband Carlos (Fernando Cayo) and seven-year-old adopted son Simon (Roger Princep). They plan to restore the old mansion as their family home and also to run it as a centre for disabled children. Young Simon soon begins to speak of imaginary friends he has met. Carlos thinks his son is simply seeking attention, but Laura becomes convinced that something sinister is afoot. Gradually, events of a very threatening nature overtake the family and Laura, with the help of a medium, Aurora (Geraldine Chaplin), is forced to confront major issues from the past.

A SECRET

The exploration of a dark family secret and a story of passionate love, through the inner journey of Francois, a lonely child who invents a brother for himself and dreams up his parents’ past. On his fifteenth birthday, a family friend’s shocking revelations finally enable the young boy to move on and build his life. UN SECRET was a box office success in France, nominated for 11 Cesar Awards.

CHILDREN OF SILK ROAD

Based on real events, The Children of the Silk Road is a sweeping but intimate story set against war-torn China in the 1930’s. The film centers on a young English journalist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), an American nurse (Radha Mitchell) and the leader of a Chinese partisan group (Chow Yun Fat) who meet in desperate and unexpected circumstances. Together they rescue 60 orphaned children, leading them on an extraordinary journey across hundreds of miles of treacherous terrain, through snow-covered mountains and an unforgiving desert. Along the way they discover the true meaning of love, responsibility and courage.

FLIGHT OF RED BALLOON

A mysterious red balloon affectionately follows 7-year-old Simon around Paris. His mother Suzanne is a puppeteer who uses her vocal talents to bring life into the shows she writes. Completely absorbed in her new show, single mother Suzanne strives to balance her work and motherhood in modern day Paris.

MONGOL

Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov ("Prisoner of the Mountains") illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in his stunning historical epic, "Mongol". Based on leading historical accounts and a nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2008 Academy Awards, "Mongol" delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162. As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of legend, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. "Mongol" shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor. Filmed in the very lands that gave birth to Genghis Khan, "Mongol" transports us back to a distant and exotic period in world history; to a nomad's landscape of endless space, climatic extremes and ever-present danger. In a performance of powerful stillness and subtlety, celebrated young Japanese actor Asano Tadanobu ("Zatoichi", "Last Life in the Universe") captures the inner fire that enabled a hunted boy to become a legendary conqueror. Asano's achievement is matched by those of his co-stars, including the radiant newcomer Khulan Chuluun as Temudgin's courageous, spirited wife Borte, and the Chinese actor Honglei Sun ("The Road Home") as the "Mongol" chieftain Jamukha, Temudgin's dearest friend and deadliest enemy. Masterfully blending action and emotion against some of the most arresting terrain on earth, Bodrov delivers an exciting and awe-inspiring tale of survival and triumph, and a love story for the ages.

SHINE A LIGHT

After exploring the careers of the Band and Bob Dylan in The Last Waltz and No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, respectively, acclaimed director Martin Scorsese turns his lens on rock & roll legends the Rolling Stones for this feature focusing on two concerts from the band's 2006 A Bigger Bang tour. In addition to extensive coverage of the band's two-night stand at New York's Beacon Theater (an engagement that was staged as part of President Bill Clinton's lavish birthday bash), the film also features historical footage, interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage from decades past. Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson (JFK and The Aviator) supervised photography for the film, with an impressive array of A-list talents, including Andrew Lesnie, John Toll, Ellen Kuras, Anastas Michos, Stuart Dryburgh, Declan Quinn, Emmanuel Lubezki, Robert Elswit, and Albert Maysles, stepping in to insure that the Beacon performances were covered from every angle possible.
